Residents carve out Halloween fun at Barrowhill Hall Care Home

Residents here at Barrowhill Hall have been getting into the spooky spirit by carving pumpkins as part of a programme of Halloween activities.

We are a 74-bedroom residential and nursing home, specialises in caring for people living with dementia and memory loss. We also has a separate household, Churnet Lodge, for people living with young-onset dementia, which is diagnosed before the age of 65.

Resident Shirley Latham, 85 said: “I really enjoyed carving the pumpkin. It was great fun seeing everyone’s finished designs, and it’s lovely to have something spooky to show off around the home for Halloween!”

The pumpkin carving session gave residents the chance to get creative while exploring the different textures, smells and feel of the pumpkins. Sensory activities can provide enjoyable, hands-on experiences for people living with dementia, helping to encourage conversation, stimulate the senses and sometimes bring familiar memories to the surface.

“It takes me back to when my children carved pumpkins,” Shirley continued. “When I was younger, I used to enjoy dressing up in a bin bag for Halloween!”

Kerry Butts, the home’s activities lead, said: “Our activities aren’t always grand; sometimes it’s about creating everyday moments and simple pleasures that feel normal, social and meaningful.

“It was lovely to see residents chatting and bonding as they carved their pumpkins, sharing memories of Halloweens gone by. Everyone put their own stamp on their designs, including feathers, glitter and gems. We have some brilliant creations that we’re very proud to display around the home.”

The pumpkin carving is just one of a number of Halloween-themed activities taking place at Barrowhill Hall. Residents will also be making chocolate toffee apples, enjoying hot chocolates and dressing up for a Halloween party featuring a live singer performing spooky-themed songs.

Dania Meadows, the home’s manager, said: “It’s wonderful to see residents enjoying themselves and getting involved in the Halloween fun. Activities like these are about much more than the finished pumpkins – they create opportunities for conversation, creativity and connection. Kerry and the team work hard to make sure there’s something for everyone to enjoy, and it’s lovely to see the home come alive with the Halloween spirit.”
