Over the next few weeks we’ll be introducing you to members of our team here at Barrowhill Hall.  First up is Martin Rogerson who took up the role of manager in January 2016.

Favourite part of Barrowhill?

It’s an absolutely beautiful area.  Barrowhill has some of the best panoramic views of the countryside because we’re so high up.  The tree line just below Churnet Lodge is home to a family of buzzards and I love watching them flying around. 

What do you want families who visit Barrowhill to take away with them? 

That they feel confident that their loved one will be extremely well cared for.  We want them to feel we have warm, welcoming, friendly staff who provide care to each person as an individual, understanding who they are, what they like and how they want to live their life.

 What’s your background, how did you come to be a care home manager?

I worked in the NHS for many years where I had a variety of nursing roles in cardiology, diabetes, dermatology and endocrinology.

It was during my time as a senior nurse coordinating admissions for elderly patients to what was then the North Staffs Hospital that I met staff dedicated to the care of older people.

It gave me an intense desire to apply my skills and knowledge in the care home sector where I could promote care of the elderly and prevent unnecessary admissions to hospital.

I started out as the manager of Astbury Mere Care Home in Congleton in 2012 before moving here to Barrowhill at the beginning of this year.

Tell us about your family

I am married to Erica.  We have two boys, Jacob who’s 17 and Tobias who is five.  Yes, a big age gap!

How do you relax? What do you do in your spare time?

I play golf, and I love cooking and baking

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? 

The best advice I was given was by my mother who once said to me, “throughout life you will have many falls and knocks but as long as you get up and dust yourself off, carry on and learn from them you will become stronger.”
